Creatine ethyl ester , also known as creatine ester , cre-ester and CEE , is a substance sold as an aid for athletic performance and for muscle development in bodybuilding . It is an ethyl ester derivative of creatine , from which it is made. In the body, CEE is converted back into creatine. [ citation needed ] CEE is said to have a much better absorption rate and a longer half-life in the body than regular creatine monohydrate , because it is slightly more lipophilic . [ citation needed ] It is also proposed to bypass the creatine transporter, thereby increasing skeletal muscle uptake of creatine and leading to an increased ability to regenerate ATP. However, in a published study comparing the two, CEE was not as effective at increasing serum and muscle creatine levels or in improving body composition, muscle mass, strength, and power. The same study found CEE to be comparable to placebo.
The efficacy of some of the newer creatine formulations is a real concern for many athletes; with good reason. One of the most popular creatine serums currently on the market has recently come under harsh criticism by the scientific community. We analyzed the validity of these allegations in a recent issue of the Creatine Newsletter . Read the first part of a two-part newsletter series discussing a scientific study that compared the ergogenic effects of ordinary creatine monohydrate powder with that of a popular creatine serum; part two compares the ability of the same brand of creatine serum to raise serum creatine levels with reference to the elevation observed with creatine monohydrate powder.
You have an excellent grasp of Creatine. Can you assist with answering the query – if Creatine Monohydrate is causing Quadriceps Muscle Cramping, unrelated to exercise, on a Maintenance Dose of 5G/day, would this indicate a need to drop the Dose to say 3G/day? A drop from 8G/day in divided doses to 5G/day saw cessation of the Quad cramps appears to be no useful scientific data of the physiology of this effect. It is not just due to need for more Salt & water ( due to drawing of water into muscles with the Creatine) or Muscle hypertonicity.
