We included people who have impetigo or impetigo contagiosa diagnosed by a medically trained person (and preferably confirmed by bacterial culture). We recorded whether or not bacterial culture was performed. The diagnosis could be either non-bullous or bullous impetigo. Studies using a broader diagnostic category such as 'bacterial skin infections' or 'pyoderma' were eligible if a specific subgroup with impetigo could be identified, for which the results were separately described. Studies on secondary impetigo or impetiginised dermatoses were included.

There is no agreed treatment for topical corticosteroid withdrawal, apart from ceasing the topical corticosteroid. However whether this should be tapered or abrupt has not been determined. Japanese reports suggest there is minimal difference in the outcome, so recommend immediate cessation. A tapering course of oral steroids is helpful, as the addiction appears to relate only to the use of topical corticosteroids. Oral tetracyclines and low-dose isotretinoin have been used in steroid rosacea and perioral /periorificial dermatitis .

Patrick M. Schlievert received his bachelor's (geology/general science, 1971) and . (microbiology, 1976) degrees from the University of Iowa. He was a postdoctoral associate at the University of Minnesota from 1976 to 1979, studying streptococcal pyrogenic toxins. In 1979, Dr. Schlievert accepted a faculty position at UCLA, where he discovered toxic shock syndrome (TSS) toxin 1 and demonstrated why tampons are associated with TSS. Dr. Schlievert returned to the University of Minnesota, where he became a full professor in 1990. In 2011, he accepted the position of Chair of Microbiology at the University of Iowa. Dr. Schlievert and colleagues have described multiple superantigen-associated illnesses, including streptococcal TSS in 1987. His research continues in the description of new diseases, drug discovery, and vaccine development. He received the University of Minnesota's highest honor for teaching microbiology and immunology to medical students and was a member of the Academic Health Center Academy of Excellence in Medical Research.
