Tucker has always eaten Science Diet food and has been fairly healthy…he does have PRA which is hereditary where he has gone blind. He started vomiting so I took him to his vet and found out he was dehydrated and have high liver count. He’s been there over night two times and the vet has put him on Science Diet LD and Denosyl and another chewable tablet. He eats it fine and has gotten better. The problem i am having is when I take him outside…he finds anything he can to eat. Is he not getting enough to fill his belly from eating this food?

German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Labs, Pit Bulls, Gordon Setters, Greyhounds and other large breed dogs are all supposed to be susceptible to SLO. There is more information on this on page 3 of this article; The Role of Breed in Canine Skin Disease and Brittle Nails in Dogs .  The more I look, the more breeds I found that suffer from this. From what I can find the disease is not contagious so you shouldn’t need to worry that your other dogs can contract it if you’ve got a multiple dog household. Untreated it can lead to total lameness! If you have a dog showing symptoms it’s imperative that you find out if SLO is the cause and take immediate action!

A severe case like this would need to be checked by your Veterinarian and Roxy would need systemic and topical antibiotics and put on a flea prevention programme. The cause of the returning pyoderma would need to be established and it may be worth having some culture and sensitivity performed as the antibiotics may not be fully clearing the infection from her body. Keep all the hot spot areas clean and free of debris; clean with dilute chlorhexidine and clip any hair around the spots and apply an antibiotic ointment to the area. But please visit your Veterinarian. Regards Dr Callum Turner DVM

Handling skills can be developed and practiced during rolls. You will learn how to crouch, set your feet and be ready to handle without bumping or tripping your dog. I handle by approaching the dog from the rear picking up his neck and chest with my left hand and lower body with my right hand. Grab the dog gently; lift with your legs and turn away from the other dog as you move toward the other dog. Continue to spin away from the other dog so your dog will not get bitten. This will embarrass the other handler. Never snatch your dog or grab him roughly. The motion should be smooth and gentle.

My Schnauzer was given Rimadyl, for a strained rear hip ligament. Ziggy developed mild diarrhea and I assumed it was an age related development. I never was given the warning pamphlet, preliminary blood work or any cautionary statement regarding this drug. Within 4 days, on a lesser dose than prescribed, Ziggy died. I contacted Pfizer and their new adjunct to handle the deluge of complaints regarding adverse effects from Rimadyl, which is Zoetis. Due dilligence and “Do no Harm” should be the mantra of every veterinarian that uses this drug for treatment. Unfortunately in Pfizer’s realm…it’s just a dog…Linda Comstock
